Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. –Romans 12:2
Try using a map you possess 10 years ago, it might not take you to your intended destination. Things change around us all the time. If you keep using the wrong map to navigate, no matter how hard you try, you will never get to where you want to be.
Mental models are like maps. We rely on maps to navigate through different paths and roads. Every decision, every turn and stop we make is determined by what is shown on the maps we hold in our minds.
It is inevitable that sometimes we can’t get to where we want to be. We find ourselves going around in circles. When that happens we should ask ourselves: Are my mental maps up-to-date? Do they hold true in any circumstances? How were these mental maps developed? Keep checking and updating our mental maps is crucial in bringing us to the right places.
Mental maps can be developed. The more maps we have, the more comprehensive our decision making can be.
